Hand Painted Kitchens
At YORKDecorator we hand paint kitchens and furniture in the Yorkshire and surrounding area on a regular basis. Some of the kitchens that I work on are new custom built, which often come pre-primed, but a lot of my work involves refurbishing existing wooden kitchens with a hand painted finish.
NEW KITCHEN OR REFURBISH YOUR KITCHEN WITH A HAND PAINTED FINISH ?
Many of my customers are still very happy with their functional designer oak or pine kitchen, still going strong after 10 or 20 years. However they acknowledge that the natural timber is looking dated and in need of some TLC.
I have looked carefully at the options of having a kitchen repainted and in terms of value for money, I am convinced that preparing, priming and hand painting an existing kitchen with a durable eggshell or even a high gloss paint really does tick all the refurbishment boxes. This transformation comes at a fraction of the cost of installing a new kitchen.
Obviously hand painting a kitchen in situ is what I do and and I'm very comfortable dealing with any of the many aspects that this type of work entails. However I appreciate that the idea of someone painting your beautiful oak kitchen may be a little unsettling. I have outlined below a very short explanation of what the work entails and a few of the potential problems that may occur.
PROTECT WORK TOPS AND FLOORS BEFORE PAINTING
All work tops and floor areas would be masked and sheeted up prior to any work commencing. By carefully masking and laying stout/lining paper I make sure that nothing will be marked or splattered during the course of the job.
HIGH PERFORMANCE PRIMER
It's all in the primer! Whether your kitchen is clear lacquered, has a protective glaze or has a varnished oak or pine finish. Most primers will struggle to stick, so I use a tried and tested favourite "zinsser B-I-N Primer/Sealer", this acts as a bonder coat over lacquer. It has a low odour and dries within minutes. With the primer in place subsequent coats of paint will perform exactly as you would expect under normal circumstances i.e. the topcoats will not peel.
Once filled with a 2 pack filler and sanded it is then primed. The zinsser also has stain blocking properties and as it's shellac based it will cover and seal back any knots.
TOP QUALITY EQUIPMENT
Having been traditionally trained I aim to use the best equipment and specialist kit available. From masking products to brushes, I use the best tools to achieve the best finishes with modern materials.
For instance to achieve the highest standard of brush work with water based paints, you need to use the best synthetic brushes. My favorite brushes for use with acrylic paints is the Proform Picasso or the Wooster FTP. These brushes wont be found in your local DIY store or even at a regular trade decorator merchants.
METHODICAL APPROACH TO PAINTING KITCHEN CABINETS
I work to a system that enables us to complete your kitchen as efficiently as possible and at the same time leaves the kitchen accessible and usable for you in its basic form for the duration of the job. So, although the doors are off and the cupboards are empty you can still use your appliances and sink.
If you would like to discuss the options for a hand-painted kitchen, please contact me without obligation. I will find the easiest way to advise you and put you in the picture. If you email me some photos to give me an idea of the scope of the job then we can take it from there.
